Concrete Real Estate

The tiny town of Concrete, located in the northeast corner of Skagit County, was first settled in 1871, when the first homesteaders built a community on the west bank of the Baker River. On the east bank, another community soon emerged around the Washington Portland Cement Company. Eventually the two towns combined forces and in 1909, Concrete was born.

During the early 1900's, many of the town's wooden buildings were destroyed by fires. Since concrete was readily available here, commercial buildings were reconstructed using this non-flammable material. Three of the oldest wood buildings – the Baker Street Grill, the Assembly of God Church, and the town Hall & Library – survived the fires and are still standing in modern day Concrete.

Concrete real estate owners embody rural living. With a population of around 800, people know each other by name and look out for one another. The air is fresh and the landscape is breathtaking. Within a few miles of Concrete are the North Cascade Mountains and the Skagit River. Year-round outdoor recreation is literally at Concrete's back door. Skiing, snowmobiling, swimming, fishing, hiking, bird watching . . . the list goes on and on.

The Concrete real estate market is popular with buyers looking to purchase vacation property. A small, two-bedroom cabin or mobile home on 1/3 of an acre is priced well-under $100,000. For those seeking more than a weekend get-away, many lovely homes are priced at $200,000 and under. And some of the more expensive properties with acreage and views are only priced in the $300,000 range. The average sales price for a home in Concrete in February 2006 was $207,537.

Although Concrete is only a couple hours away from Seattle, the lifestyle is a world apart.
