Covington Real Estate

Like many rural King County communities, the city of Covington got its start in the late 1800's as a logging town. In 1890, the Covington Lumber Company was formed near a junction of the Northern Pacific Railway, which drew many homesteaders to the area. Today, Covington is growing so rapidly that it's hard to estimate the community's population. Some statistics report a population of 15,000; others site a figure of nearly 17,000.

A unique attribute among the Covington city officials is the desire to create a community where the residents can work where they live. This desire has spurred additional growth in the area of commerce. Medical clinics, banking, real estate, restaurants, shopping centers, and professional office space all contribute to the vitality of Convington's economy.

For those who choose to work in the surrounding cities, the commute from Covington is quite manageable because of its accessibility to Highway 18 and Highway 516. Covington is about 23 miles southeast of Seattle and Kent is less than nine miles away.

Nearly 90% of the homes in Covington are owner occupied and it's not hard to see why! As you might conclude due to its rural location, Covington real estate is quite affordable. Many lovely older homes are priced in the low $200,000's. New construction starts in the mid $200,000's. On the higher end you can buy 3,000 square foot homes in the low $400,000's. The average sales price for a home in Covington in February 2006 was $342,327.

Buying Covington real estate will provide you with a lower mortgage than many other King County cities. It will also provide you with views of Mount Rainier, fresh water lakes, and open fairways when golfing. As the people who live here will tell you, Covington is a great place to live, work, and play.
