Lakewood Real Estate

Although the Pierce County city of Lakewood has only been incorporated since 1996, the community's roots can be traced back to the 1800's, when the area was used as one of the Hudson Bay Company's fur trading operations. In the early 1900's, many impressive homes were built along the various lakes. Several of these homes have been renovated are still in use.

Today, Lakewood is a residential and commercial community with a population of approximately 60,000. Conveniently located along Interstate 5, Lakewood is about seven miles south of Tacoma and next to McChord Air Force Base and Fort Lewis.

Lakewood is sometimes referred to as the Lakes District because of the numerous lakes located throughout its 20 square miles. Waterfront property in Lakewood starts in the high $400,000's. But if you're open to Lakewood real estate without water, nice three-bedroom homes are available starting in the low $200,000's. Throughout the community, pride in ownership is evident in the well-kept homes and yards. In February 2006, the average single family home or condo sold for $280,198 in Lakewood.

The Lakewood Towne Center houses several major retailers strategically placed to meet the shopping needs of those who live here. The Center is described as the “symbolic main street” of Lakewood and is a popular gathering place for young and old alike. Throughout the community, smaller shopping centers and strip malls provide easy access to everyday essentials.
Just minutes from Lakewood is one of the most popular parks in Pierce County, the still-evolving 340-acre Fort Steilacoom Park. Largely undeveloped, this park invites hours of exploration through the land's natural habitat. Many athletic and recreation amenities are currently being added to the park, including baseball fields, soccer fields, and picnic facilities.
