Although the first hut was built on the Peninsula in 1848 and the first wharf was built in 1885, Longbranch wouldn't receive its name until 1889.

During the early decades of the 1900's, lumbermen, farmers, and fishermen settled in Longbranch, carving out a life in the waterfront wilderness. The Longbranch Improvement Club was an organization of settlers intent on enriching the lives of Longbranch residents. Hosting baseball games, Halloween parties, and New Year's Eve dances were some of the ways the Club brought the people together. The Longbranch Improvement Club would eventually purchase land that would be designated for schools, parks, and athletic use.

Today, the Longbranch Improvement Club continues to unite the community. It operates the Longbranch Marina, which provides moorage for members and visiting boaters. It also founded the Key Peninsula Community Fair in 2001, a now-annual summer event.

The Longbranch real estate market offers homes brimming with privacy and territorial beauty. The average home sales price in February 2006 was $545,500 in Longbranch. However, a wooded cottage with beach rights might sell for less than $150,000. Three-bedroom view homes can be bought for less than $300,000. And stunning waterfront estates with views of Filucy Bay and Mount Rainier are a bargain at less than $1M.
