Rainier Real Estate

Seattle's Rainier Valley is both a neighborhood and a geographical location. Southeast of downtown, it spans an area of six miles, almost reaching the Renton city line. The Rainier Valley is a collection of communities including Mt. Baker, Columbia City, Seward Park, and Beacon Hill.

Homesteaded in the 1880's, Rainier has long been a landing spot for immigrants. So many Italians settled here almost 100 years ago that, for a time, the area became known as the “Garlic Gulch.”

Today, the heritage of multiple cultures can be found in the ethnic restaurants and minority-owned shops woven throughout the streets and business centers. People come from miles around to buy sweet delicacies at Borracchini's. Although many African-Americans and Asians live here, Rainier has the most racially diverse population in Seattle.

Rainier is home to Martin Luther King Jr. Park, which is named after the late civil rights leader. Built on the hillside, the park offers some of area's most remarkable views. Columbia City provides Rainier residents with local produce at its weekly Farmer's Market. And throughout the Rainier Valley neighbors look out for each other in true community spirit.

Affordability is what attracts many homebuyers to the Rainier real estate market. Here, you can still buy a two-bedroom home for less than $200,000 – this is almost unheard of anywhere else within the Seattle city limits. In fact, the average single family home or condo sold for $230,400 in February 2006. Many first time buyers are excited by the opportunity to get more home for their budget and still be close to the city center and major freeways.
