Seward Park Real Estate

The original residents of Seward Park were native Americans from the Duamish Tribe. White settlers came to the area in the late 1800's and began logging the old-growth trees. Today, Seward Park is a residential Seattle neighborhood bordered by Lake Washington to the east, South Genesse Street to the north, South Kenyon Street to the south and Rainier Avenue South to the west.

Seward Park was named for the adjacent park that juts into Lake Washington's southwest shore. The park itself is a remnant of the old-growth forest, boasting beautiful scenery and lush gardens. Picnic and play areas are available and an amphitheater holds large crowds for a variety of outdoor events. In addition, a 2.5-mile path winds around the waterfront and a public beach is available for summertime swimming.

Diverse housing structures can be found in Seward Park, from impressive homes overlooking the lake and Mount Rainier to more modest houses that line the streets closer to Rainier Avenue. As you might expect, the housing prices vary widely. A nicely-updated mid-1900's cottage can be purchased for around $260,000. If you want Seward Park real estate with a view, you can expect to pay upwards of $1M or more. The average sales price for a home in February 2006, was $496,295.

Much like the Seward Park real estate market, the community is extremely diverse, both culturally and economically. Approximately 25 percent of the population is African-American and another 25 percent is of Asian and Pacific Islander descent. The Seward Park neighborhood has been the center of Seattle's Orthodox Jewish life for nearly 90 years.

With an 80 percent home-ownership rate, Seward Park is a neighborhood where people stay for a lifetime, getting to know others who live here and taking an active role in preserving their surroundings.
